Today on the podcast we have a special guest! We have Sarah Light, founder and creator of Sol Planners, a paper planner designed for the female entrepreneur who is goal-oriented and wants to make the most of their time. Her love of all things stationery, fonts, and beautiful design began in 7th grade when she discovered clip art! Many years later, that turned into a paper planner that is really functional and also really pretty! This women in business podcast episode is all about aligning your values and your schedule in your business with Sarah Light shows you it really is possible!
The Power of Aligning Your Values to Your Schedule
What do I do to focus? What increases my focus? Much of that has to do with organizing and prioritizing our time. Utilizing the right tools can help with this. For Sarah, that came from having the right planner and showing other people the things that come easy to her, but other people may struggle with.
If you are wanting to align your planning with your own values, she recommends taking time to be still and think before you plan your week, quarter, or year. What’s most important to you in this season? You have to be willing to ask yourself this in an ongoing way – not just once per decade. What are your values and how do you want your schedule to reflect those? It takes discipline to do this work.
Overplanning vs. Under Planning in Your Business
If we don’t schedule out our specific time, we can get off track and waste a lot of time. This is a spectrum – from spending way too much time planning to winging everything, which can lead to putting out fires all day. Our time is something given to us and we can be good stewards to the Lord with our time. We need to intentionally plan our time, but then hold those plans loosely, knowing we need to be flexible in our schedule. Knowing what’s important helps you to be flexible with your time.
Tracking Your Progress in Your Business for Growth
We often don’t remember our accomplishments, and Sarah’s Sol Planner help us to remember! Her suggestion? Keep it simple. To help us track our progress, in alignment with our values, the planner includes questions at the end of the week. For example, questions like “How did you honor your priorities?” helps us pause and reflect before you plan for the next week. Another tool in her planner is to brain dump for the next week – putting it all out on one page. Then ranking your top 5 items for this next week. What’s the most important thing? This helps us to remember where we want to focus our time and our attention.
It’s easy to think “I don’t have time for this.” But you really don’t have time not to do it. It sets you up for business success. Keep it simple if it’s not something you have done regularly in the past. You can set a timer for 10 minutes to plan the most important things and then start doing it. It might not come naturally, but it is a discipline that can benefit everyone.
Sarah’s big takeaway today? Set aside time to reflect on what’s most important to you and what God is calling to you in this season, and then ask how you can increase your focus and honor those values with your time. By aligning your values and your schedule in your business with Sarah Light you can take your business to the next level!
