What to Do When God is Silent

A graphic with a bible underneath and words that say What to do when God is silent for a Christian business podcast for women.

As a teacher, there are times when you ask a question or try to foster a discussion, and… crickets. The silence is deafening and awkward. Today, we will discuss a kind of silence even more unsettling: when you feel like God is silent. As we dive into this episode, particularly relevant for those tuning in to Christian podcasts for women and women in business podcasts, we’ll explore how to navigate these challenging moments when God is silent.

It has been a tough season for me. My husband lost his job, and shortly after, my business started tanking. I thought this would be my moment to “save the day” and see my business thrive. Instead, the opposite happened, and God seemed silent. I sat in the overwhelm and frustration for a long time. Here’s how I found my way out (spoiler alert: it’s a process, so listen all the way to the end).

Acknowledge That God is Silent

First, acknowledge it. There is power in saying you feel like God is silent. God can handle our questioning, our anger, and our doubts. Don’t go silent on Him. Speak out what you are feeling. Psalm 22:1-2 says, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help? Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief.”

Respond with Worship

Second, don’t give God the silent treatment in return. But, and it’s a big but, worship. Keep coming before the Lord. Spend time with Him. Open His Word. Spend time in prayer. We have a great episode on prayer (Episode 85). Silence can lead to a stalemate, and it can let Satan gain a foothold. Don’t let him gain access to your mind. Fill it with God. Psalm 22:3 starts with “Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. Our ancestors trusted in you, and you rescued them. They cried out to you and were saved. They trusted in you and were never disgraced.”

Listen for When God Speaks

Third, listen. This step is often skipped, especially in our loud world. We have to ask to hear from God and then truly listen. For me, this often happens in the middle of the night, in the midst of sorrow, deep prayer, or stillness. Ask God to give you the space. Carve out time. Put your phone away and just concentrate. This is hard to do, but so worth it.

Don’t Give Up

Finally, don’t give up. Until God shuts a door, keep moving forward. Don’t sit and expect God to drop answers in your lap. We have to take action. It’s a process and usually isn’t quick. Sometimes, you might not understand what it means when He is speaking. Sarah will talk more about this in the next episode. Don’t miss it. When you acknowledge, worship, seek, listen, and move forward, He will speak. It might not be what you expect, but have an expectation that you will hear from Him. Don’t cross your arms and give God the silent treatment. Chances are, He is speaking—we just aren’t listening.
